Chlorine Courage

doghairhatwaterpool

Sixteen and terrified. That's me, standing at the edge of Jake's pool party clutching my dad's old fishing hat like it's a life raft. Underneath? A disaster zone of frizzy brown curls that I'd tried to dye sun-kissed blonde but ended up looking like I'd stuck my head in a bowl of Froot Loops.

"You coming in or what?" Jake called from the pool, dripping wet, impossibly confident. The water sparkled like liquid diamonds behind him. Everyone was already in—except me.

"In a minute," I lied, adjusting the hat brim lower. My hair had its own ecosystem at this point.

Then chaos arrived in the form of Buster, Jake's massive golden retriever, who clearly didn't understand personal space. He came tearing across the deck, wet fur flying like bullets, and launched himself at me full speed. I stumbled backward. The hat flew off. My mutant rainbow curls sprung free like a demented party favor.

Dead silence. Everyone stared.

My life was over. I'd have to change schools. Maybe move to another country.

But then Buster did something unexpected—he started licking my hair like it was the most delicious thing he'd ever tasted. His tail thumped against the pool edge so hard it created actual waves.

"Dude," Jake said, laughing so hard he had to wipe his eyes. "Your hair is legendary. Even Buster thinks so."

Someone else—Sarah, from my English class—called out, "Actually, I've been wanting to try that color! What brand did you use?"

"It was an accident," I admitted, feeling my face heat up.

"Well," Sarah said, pulling herself up on the pool deck, "the accident kind of slaps. Come in. The water's perfect."

I looked at my ridiculous curls, now partially plastered with dog saliva. I looked at the pool, where people were actually waiting for me. I took a breath, dropped the ruined hat on the deck, and jumped.

The cool water swallowed me whole. When I broke the surface, dripping and definitely not perfect, everyone was still there. Still waiting. still—miraculously—thinking my chaotic hair was kind of cool.

Sometimes the worst disasters become your best stories. And sometimes, you just have to take the plunge—hat, hair, and all.
