Chlorine Courage
Maya pulled her bucket **hat** down low, trying to disappear into the lawn chair. The annual summer pool party at Sarah's house—the social event of the season—buzzed around her like electricity she couldn't quite tap into. Girls in bikinis that cost more than her entire wardrobe floated on pink flamingos. Guys showed off their abs like they were achievements unlocked in a video game.
And then there was Maya, wearing her older cousin's oversized **orange** t-shirt that said "LIFEGUARD" even though she'd barely passed swim lessons last summer. Her phone buzzed. Probably her mom asking if she'd made friends yet. She grabbed the tangled charging **cable** from her bag—her excuse to retreat inside if things got too awkward.
"Maya! Come in!" Sarah called from the **pool**, splashing water like she was in a commercial. "The water's perfect!"
Maya's stomach did that awful flip it did when teachers called on her unexpectedly. She wasn't ready. She'd been working on herself all summer—therapy, confidence affirmations on TikTok at 2 AM—but the jump from her mirror at home to this crowd felt like crossing the Grand Canyon.
Then she saw him. Tyler, the guy she'd had a crush on since seventh grade, sitting alone on the pool edge with a giant inflatable **bear** wrapped around him like a hug. He looked ridiculous. He looked lonely.
Something in her chest shifted. That's when she realized—everyone was faking it. The popular girls, the confident boys, everyone was just pretending they knew what they were doing.
She stood up,橘-shirt and all, and walked toward the pool. "Mind if I join bear club?" she asked Tyler.
He laughed, surprised. "Only if you can handle the claws."
She stepped into the water, heart pounding, and let herself float. Not alone anymore. Not entirely brave, but brave enough.
