chlorine & consequences
Maya stared at her reflection, fingers hovering over the bleach kit she'd smuggled home. Her dark brown hair—perfect, untouched, boring—needed to change before Tyler's pool party next weekend. Everyone else was already talking about it.
"Just do it," she whispered, shaking the bottle. Three hours later, she stared at the mirror in horror. Her hair wasn't blonde. It was orange. Like, traffic cone orange.
Friday arrived with the humidity of doom. The backyard was already packed when she slipped through the gate, hoodie pulled up. She spotted him immediately—Tyler, laughing with his perfect hair and his stupid perfect life by the pool. And there it was: Buster, his golden retriever, doing laps in the water like he owned the place.
"Maya!" someone called. "Finally!"
The hoodie had to come off eventually. She could feel the stares as her orange hair caught the sunlight. Great. This was it. Social suicide.
Then Buster shook himself off directly next to her.
"Oh my GOD, Maya!" Chloe squealed from behind her sunglasses. "Your hair is literally EVERYTHING. Did you do that on purpose?"
Maya blinked. "What?"
"It's giving cottagecore main character energy," someone else said.
"Totally intentional vibes."
By the time Tyler appeared, drying his hair with a towel, the narrative had already shifted. "Whoa," he said, looking at her. "That looks actually sick. I mean it."
"Thanks," Maya managed, floating in the shallow end while Buster paddled around them like a furry lifeguard. "It's supposed to be this exact color. Obviously."
Whatever. She'd take it.
Later, watching the sunset turn the pool water pink and gold, she realized something weird. Her hair was a disaster, she smelled like wet dog, and she'd spent three hours hiding in the bathroom. But somehow, for the first time all summer, she felt like she could actually breathe.
Buster nudged her hand with his wet nose, and Maya laughed. Sometimes the worst accidents turned out to be the plot twist you didn't know you needed.
