Chlorine & Chaos
Maya stood at the edge of the pool, clutching her towel like a lifeline. Everyone else was already in—Jake doing cannonballs off the diving board, Chloe floating on an inflatable flamingo while gossiping about Tyler's Insta story, and even quiet Marcus from calculus doing laps in the slow lane. But Maya? She was frozen.
Three hours she'd spent this morning. Three hours on her hair. Straightening. Curling. Perfecting. Because Dylan was supposed to be here, and Dylan had commented "nice" on her selfie last week, which basically meant they were practically dating, right?
But now her hair was secured in a messy bun on top of her head, and she was wearing her old one-piece because she'd grown out of last year's bikini and refused to wear something that didn't fit perfectly. Screw confidence. Some of us needed armor.
"Maya!" Chloe yelled, splashing water. "Get in here! The water's literal perfection!"
Before Maya could respond, Buster—Chloe's chaotic golden retriever who'd been banned from the pool area three times already came tearing through the gate. Someone had left it unlatched. Again.
Buster spotted Maya. Buster loved Maya. Buster made a beeline.
"NO—" Maya started, but it was too late. The wet, furry cannonball slammed into her at full velocity. They both went down—hard. She landed halfway in the shallow end, her bun exploding into a frizzy disaster, her dignity somewhere at the bottom of the deep end.
Everyone stared. And then someone laughed.
But not mean-laughed. Jake was losing it. "That was AWESOME. 10/10, Buster!"
Chloe was howling. "I'm so sorry but also that was kind of iconic."
Maya sat up, dripping, her hair a halo of frizz around her head. And then—she started laughing too. Because what else could she do? Her three-hour masterpiece was ruined. Dylan still wasn't here. And she was currently being licked by a very enthusiastic dog who smelled like wet fur and poor life choices.
"You know what?" Maya said, standing up and pulling off her hair tie completely. Her curls went every direction, wild and uncontained. "Whatever."
She jumped into the pool. Clothes and all.
Jake high-fived her when she surfaced. Chloe tossed her a pair of extra sunglasses from her bag. Even Marcus gave her a nod of respect.
And okay, maybe Dylan never showed. But somehow, Buster the chaos dog jumping the fence ended up being the best thing that happened all summer. Sometimes you need to get knocked into a pool to realize nobody's actually watching you that closely anyway.
