Maya stared at the **pool** from the edge, her toes curled tight against the concrete. Jordan's annual end-of-summer bash. Everyone who mattered would be here, and somehow, she'd scored an invite.

"You coming in or what?" Jordan called from the water, grinning that devastating grin that made half the sophomore class forget their own names.

"Yeah! Just, uh, warming up!" Maya's voice cracked. Smooth. Real smooth.

Her phone buzzed in her bag—her mom's **iPhone**, technically, since Maya's was dead. Again. *Where r u? party started 20 mins ago*—Tori. Maya tucked the phone deeper under her towel like it was contraband.

The snack table beckoned like a lifeline. Maya grabbed a paper plate, desperate to look busy. There was fruit salad—chunks of **papaya** weirdly orange against the watermelon. She piled some on because that's what confident people probably did, ate exotic fruit without worrying if it looked like they were trying too hard.

"Nice plate," someone said behind her.

Maya turned too fast, **papaya** chunks sliding dangerously. Chase. Jordan's best friend. The one who'd sat behind her in English last year, the one she'd spent half the semester silently low-key obsessing over.

"Thanks," she managed. "I'm. You know. Keeping it real."

Chase raised an eyebrow. "Real? With the papaya? Bold move."

"I'm living on the edge."

"Cool." He leaned against the table, all casual energy she'd never mastered. "So, Jordan said you're trying out for the play?"

And there it was—the thing she'd been avoiding thinking about all summer. Theater tryouts. Where her older sister had been a legend. Where Maya would probably get cast as Tree #3 or, if lucky, The Emotional Nihilist Who Has Two Lines.

"Maybe," she said. "I mean, probably not. My sister—"

"**Bull**," Chase said softly.

Maya blinked. "What?"

"That stuff you tell yourself. About how you can't do it.**Bull**." He gestured at the pool, at Jordan doing a backflip off the diving board while everyone screamed. "Jordan didn't know how to swim two years ago. Now look at him."

"That's different—"

"Is it?" Chase's eyes were serious now. "You think you're the only one who's scared?" He reached for the vegetable tray, grabbed a **spinach** leaf, rolled it like a taco. "This stuff's nasty by the way. But you eat it because it's good for you. Growth stuff." He crunched it down, made a face. "See? Terrible. But necessary."

Maya laughed despite herself. "Did you just use **spinach** to give me a pep talk?"

"I did. And I'm not proud of it." Chase straightened up. "Tryouts are Tuesday. I'll see you there."

"You're—"

"Trying out too.**Bull** artist, remember?" He winked. "Now get in the **pool**, Maya. Jordan's doing a synchronized swimming routine and he needs backup."

Maya looked at the water, at Tori waving from the shallow end, at Jordan already choreographing something ridiculous. At Chase, walking backward toward the diving board, grinning like he knew something she didn't.

She took a breath and dove in.

The water was cold and shocking and perfect.
