Chlorine and Sunshine

Maya pulled the oversized bucket **hat** lower over her forehead, but the brim kept flopping up like a dead flower. So on trend, or at least that's what TikTok claimed. Standing at the edge of Jessica's backyard **pool**, she watched the splash fight with the jealous intensity of someone who'd rather be anywhere — or nowhere — at all.

"You coming in or what?" Tyler called, grinning with that effortless confidence that made Maya's chest tight. He'd grown six inches over summer and now towered over everyone, his skin permanently bronzed from weekends at his lake house.

"In a minute!" Maya chirped, lying through perfectly whitened teeth. Her mother had started her on some trendy **vitamin** regimen that morning — "for your glow, baby" — which so far had only resulted in Maya feeling vaguely pharmaceutical.

The **water** glittered like scattered diamonds, catching every ray of late afternoon sun. Laughter rippled across the surface, punctuated by the thud-bass of a Drake song from somewhere inside. Everyone looked so comfortable in their skin, so sure of who they were supposed to be.

Zoe caught Maya's eye from the shallow end and waved. "Last one in buys boba!"

Something in Maya shifted. She wasn't sure if it was the vitamin-induced optimism kicking in, or the fact that Zoe — effortlessly cool Zoe who'd been Maya's crush since seventh grade — was actually looking at her, expecting her to show up.

Maya shoved the ridiculous hat off her head and shook out her hair. Let it be a mess. Let everything be a mess.

"Boba's on me," Maya called back, and before she could overthink it, she cannonballed into the deep end.

The chlorine shock hit like electric truth, cool and sharp and absolutely real. Underwater, the world went muffled and blue-gold, suspended in that perfect weightless moment where expectations dissolved and there was only this: kicking upward, breaking surface, gasping in beautiful ordinary air.

She surfaced splashing, laughing, with chlorine in her nose and Zoe paddling closer and Tyler shouting something about boba flavors, and for once Maya wasn't watching from the edges. She was right here, hair plastered to her forehead, makeup definitely ruined, completely and utterly herself.
