Chlorine and Spinach Smile

Maya's summer plan was simple: survive her cousin's pool party without embarrassing herself in front of Jake, the cute neighbor she'd been lowkey crushing on since seventh grade. Spoiler alert: she failed catastrophically.

It started when she arrived, already overthinking everything. Jake was by the pool, looking stupidly attractive in swim trunks, and Maya immediately panicked. Her brain went into fight-or-flight mode, but unfortunately, it chose neither. Instead, she froze like a deer in headlights, clutching her paper plate of appetizers like it was a lifeline.

"Hey Maya," Jake said, swimming over to the edge. "Having fun?"

She nodded, terrified to speak because she knew something was wrong. She'd felt it when she smiled earlier—a weird, leafy sensation between her front teeth. But she'd checked quickly in her phone camera and saw nothing.

Wrong. So wrong.

It wasn't until she'd been chatting with Jake for ten agonizing minutes that his cousin Lily finally pulled her aside by the bathroom.

"Maya," Lily whispered urgently. "You have a massive piece of spinach in your teeth. Like, FULL spinach."

The horror. The absolute cringe. Maya had been walking around with spinach in her teeth for probably thirty MINUTES while talking to her crush.

"Oh my god," Maya whispered, her face burning. "Why didn't anyone tell me?"

Lily shrugged. "We thought you knew. You seemed confident."

CONFIDENT. With spinach in her teeth. The audacity.

Maya did what any reasonable person would do: she sprinted. She went running down the driveway, past the confused cat, all the way to the corner store, where she bought emergency mouthwash and analyzed her entire life choices.

But when she finally returned, red-faced and spinach-free, Jake was still there, waiting by the pool like he hadn't just witnessed the most embarrassing moment of her life.

"Hey," he said, grinning. "You know, you're pretty when you're embarrassed."

Maya froze. Wait. WHAT?

"And honestly," Jake added, "the spinach thing was kind of iconic. You really just leaned into it."

Maya stared at him, then burst out laughing. Because honestly? What was she supposed to do? Sometimes you have the spinach in your teeth, you go running down the street, and somehow, against all odds, the cute neighbor still thinks you're pretty.

Life was weird like that. And the cat was still judging her from the porch, but whatever.
