Chlorine and Secrets

Elena sat at the edge of the hotel pool, legs submerged in the warm water, nursing a gin and tonic she hadn't touched in twenty minutes. The chlorinated scent triggered memories she'd spent three years trying to drown โ€” their honeymoon in Nice, Marcus's hand on her thigh, the way he'd looked at her like she was the only person in the world worth loving.

Now she knew better.

"You've been following me for three weeks," she said to the empty air.

The decorative goldfish pond nearby shimmered with orange and white flashes, the fish swimming in endless circles, their seven-second memories a blessing. They'd never remember how they'd been betrayed. They'd never wake up at 3 AM wondering if their entire marriage had been a cover operation.

Marcus stepped out from behind the tall potted palm. He looked tired, the sharp lines of his face softened by something like regret. Or maybe that was just the poolside lighting.

"El, you need to come back inside. The delegates are waiting."

"I'm not your asset anymore, Marcus. I haven't been since you recruited me to spy on my own father's company. Did you ever love me? Or was I just convenient access to the boardroom?"

The water lapped against her calves, relentless as her own heartbeat. She thought about all those mornings he'd kissed her forehead before leaving for 'work,' all those evenings he'd asked about her day with such genuine concern. Had it all been reconnaissance?

"You know the answer to that," Marcus said quietly.

"Do I? Because lately I've been feeling like one of these goldfish โ€” swimming in circles, forgetting nothing, trapped in someone else's aquarium. At least they get fed."

"It's not too late. We can stillโ€”"

"Still what? Still pretend? Still lie?" She pulled her legs from the pool, water dripping onto the concrete like tears. "I'm done being your spy in the house. Find someone else to betray your country for."
