Chlorine and Secrets

Elena sat at the edge of the pool, legs dangling in the cool blue water, nursing her third glass of champagne. The vitamin C supplement she'd taken that morning was doing nothing to dull the hollow ache in her chest. Behind her, in the hotel room, a solitary goldfish circled its bowl—a housewarming gift from two years ago, when they still believed in forever.

She smoothed her hair, recently touched up at an expensive salon, another mask she wore. Next to her on the lounge chair, Marcus's phone buzzed. He'd gone inside to get more ice, but the device kept lighting up with encrypted messages from numbers she didn't recognize.

Elena had become a spy in her own marriage. Three weeks ago, she'd discovered the burner phone in his gym bag. Tonight, watching him laugh with some nameless woman across the pool, she understood the surveillance had been unnecessary. His eyes had the same hungry look they'd once given her, now directed elsewhere.

She thought about the night they'd met here, at this same resort. The pool had seemed magical then, reflecting stars and promise. Now it just reminded her of how easily things can look perfect from above while hiding depths of darkness beneath.

The goldfish would need feeding soon. She wondered who would remember it after she left. Probably Marcus's new companion, whoever she was.

Elena finished her champagne and stood, water dripping from her legs onto the concrete. Some bonds, she realized, dissolve like vitamin tablets in water—visible for a moment, then gone without a trace.
