Chlorine and Secrets

The swimming pool at 5 AM had become Elena's sanctuary, the only place where Richard's betrayal couldn't reach her. Through goggles fogged with tears and chlorine, she'd swim lap after lap until her muscles burned and her mind went blissfully blank.

That morning, she'd found them in his gym bag: a bottle of vitamin D supplements — he'd always mocked her for taking vitamins, called them expensive placebos — and a small, zippered pouch. Inside, a single strand of long blonde hair, coiled like a secret he couldn't quite let go of.

She'd known Richard was unhappy. Their marriage had been drowning in silence for years. But she hadn't realized he'd been swimming in someone else's waters.

The vitamins were the cruelest part. They were prescription strength — the kind you took when you were trying to be your best self for someone new. The hair was unmistakably not hers. Elena's was dark and cropped short after the chemo, a growth she'd actually grown to love during her unexpected remission.

Richard had always said he loved her short hair. Said it made her look fierce, like a survivor.

Now she wondered if he'd simply stopped looking at her altogether.

She pulled herself from the pool, water streaming from her body like she was shedding an old skin. In the locker room mirror, she studied her reflection. The hair, growing back in fuzzy tufts. The body that had survived cancer but apparently couldn't survive his wandering heart.

Elena smiled suddenly, a sharp and surprising thing. She'd swim through this, too. She'd always been the stronger swimmer.

At home, she packed her bags, leaving the vitamins on his pillow. Let him explain. Let him drown in his own explanations for once.

Some marriages, she realized, were like swimming pools: beautiful from a distance, but full of chemicals you couldn't taste until you were already submerged.
