Chlorine and Secrets

The hotel pool was empty at 2 AM, which was exactly why Elena chose this hour. The water glowed with that artificial blue they achieve with too many chemicals, the kind that leaves your skin smelling clean and wrong. She sat on the edge, legs dangling in, watching her bare feet break the surface into ripples that died too quickly.

She wasn't alone.

From the corner of her eye, she'd seen him approach—Mark, her husband of seven years, wearing the Panama hat she'd given him for their anniversary. He didn't speak, just settled into the lounge chair beside hers, close enough that she could smell the whiskey on his breath, far enough that they didn't touch.

"You're a spy now," she said, staring at the water. "Following me."

"I'm your husband. Following isn't the right word."

"Then what is it?"

He didn't answer. The truth hung between them like the humidity, thick and suffocating. For six months, he'd been tracking her movements through her phone's location, monitoring her credit card charges, showing up at coffee shops ten minutes after she arrived. He called it love. She called it something she couldn't say aloud without breaking.

"I wore your hat," he said finally. "To remind you of better times."

Elena looked at him then really looked—at the man who'd once made her laugh until her ribs ached, who now sat like a stranger in their marriage, wearing love like a costume that no longer fit. The hat sat crooked on his head, tragic and ridiculous.

"The problem," she said, pulling her legs from the water, "is that you're trying to spy on someone who's already gone."

She stood, dripping chlorinated water onto the concrete, and walked back to their room alone. Behind her, she heard the splash of someone entering the pool, but she didn't look back.
