Chlorine and Secrets

runningpoolspyfriend

The hotel pool was empty at 2 AM, save for Elena doing laps. She'd been running from her thoughts for hours, literally—five miles on the treadmill before abandoning it for the water. Her legs burned, but the silence was worse.

"You're avoiding me."

Elena gasped, swallowing chlorinated water. Marcus sat in the shadows of a lounge chair, martinis on the table between them. Her best friend of fifteen years. Her colleague. The man she'd trusted with everything.

"Jesus, Marcus. You scared me."

"I've been calling for three days." His voice was flat. "You're not at work. You're not home. I had to track your phone."

Track. The word lingered. Elena pulled herself to the pool's edge, water dripping from her hair. "How did you even get in here?"

"I know people." Marcus stood, walking to the edge. The water reflected his tired face. "Elena, the audit finishes tomorrow. They know someone's been selling client data. They're going to subpoena everything."

Elena's stomach dropped. She'd suspected for months—unexplained deposits in Marcus's accounts, his newfound generosity. But a spy? In their department? "And you're telling me this because..."

"Because I'm your friend." He knelt beside her. "I've been watching you. Gathering proof. I need you to come clean before they find out I knew and didn't say anything."

The betrayal hit like cold water. Marcus wasn't confessing. He was cutting a deal. He'd been spying on her to protect himself.

"You were supposed to be my friend," she whispered.

"I am." His voice cracked. "I'm the only one trying to help you."

Elena stood, water streaming down her body. Running wasn't working anymore. Neither was swimming. The only way out was through.

"No," she said, stepping toward him. "Friends don't set each other up. Friends don't play spy." She grabbed her towel. "I'm done running. Tomorrow, I go to HR myself. And I tell them everything—including that my best friend sat here watching me drown instead of throwing me a line."

Marcus reached for her hand, but Elena was already walking away, leaving nothing behind but ripples in the pool and a friendship that couldn't be salvaged.
