Chlorine and Second Chances
The pool party was in full swing, bass thumping from bluetooth speakers, but I was busy having a full-blown crisis. My oversized bucket hat was my only shield, pulled low over my eyes as I lurked near the snack table like a total creeper.
"Yo, Maya! Come swim!" Jordan called from the pool, water droplets glistening on his abs. The same Jordan I'd been lowkey crushing on since freshman year. The same Jordan whose party I was currently crashing because my best friend Leah dragged me here.
"I'm good! Just chilling!" I called back, voice cracking. Smooth.
I'd made a tactical error earlier—scarfing down a spinach wrap before arriving. Now I could feel green remnants threatening my smile like a biological weapon. I was trapped in a social nightmare: dehydration vs. exposing my spinach-filled teeth.
Then disaster struck. Some random golden retriever—the homeowner's dog, probably—came barreling through, tail like a metronome of destruction. It slammed into the fruit table, sending a papaya flying. The exotic fruit splatted on the pool deck, juice everywhere. The dog, now titled "Papaya Slayer" in my mental file, bounded toward Jordan.
"Dude! Watch the dog!" someone laughed.
Jordan wiped papaya juice from his arm, grinning. He looked up and caught me staring. He waved me over.
I froze. This was it. My moment to either stay invisible or take the L and actually live. My hand went to my hat, ready to pull it lower, but instead I slid it off entirely.
"Coming!" I called back, spinach be damned.
As I walked toward the pool, I caught my reflection in a window. Yeah, there was totally spinach in my teeth. But Jordan was still smiling, still waiting, and somehow that made everything okay.
"Nice hat," he said as I reached him.
"Trade you?" I grinned, revealing my spinach-stained smile. "Hat for chlorine?"
He laughed. "Deal."
And just like that, I jumped in, chlorine burning my eyes, papaya under my feet, dog barking somewhere on deck, finally feeling like I was exactly where I was supposed to be.
