Chlorine and Second Chances

The spinach was stuck between my teeth. I could feel it—this massive, bright-green chunk of screaming social suicide—lodged right in front as I laughed at something Lucas said.

"Maya, your hair," Kai whispered, tugging a strand behind my ear. Our code since sixth grade: something's wrong.

I froze. This was it. The end of my life as I knew it. Lucas—the guy I'd been lowkey obsessing over since summer started—was finally talking to me, and I had spinach in my teeth. Not just any spinach. leftover from the fancy smoothie bowls his mom had made.

I bolted toward the pool, needing something, anything to fix this. But my foot caught on someone's discarded towel, and I faceplanted straight into the shallow end. The water swallowed me, chlorine burning my nose, my dignity dissolving with every second under the surface.

When I came up sputtering, everyone was staring.

Everyone except Lucas, who was doubled over laughing. Not at me—with me. "That was legendary," he called out, offering me his hand. "I do that at least once every pool party."

My palm was sweating as I reached out. Literally dripping. Because Lucas was holding my hand, pulling me up, and the spinach was still in my teeth.

"You got a little..." He gestured at his own smile. But not in a mean way. In a way that made his eyes crinkle.

Kai appeared out of nowhere with a napkin. "That smoothie was intense," they said loudly, handing it to me. "I looked like a swamp creature too."

I scraped the spinach out, my face burning. But Lucas just shrugged like it was nothing. "So, Maya," he said, splashing water my way, "you want to race? Loser has to eat another spinach smoothie."

Maybe this wasn't my most embarrassing moment ever. Maybe it was the start of everything.

I smoothed my wet hair back, feeling the sun on my face, and dove in.
