Chlorine and Courage

Maya's hair refused to cooperate. She'd spent forty-five minutes trying to curl it into beach waves like the girls on TikTok, but it just looked like she'd stuck her finger in an electrical socket. The mirror showed a desperate freshman staring back, about to attend her first high school pool party.

"You look fine," said little sister Chloe from the doorway, holding Mittens, their cat, who purred like a motorboat. "You're overthinking it."

Easy for her to say. Chloe wasn't the one who'd been crushing on Jake since seventh period English, when he'd let her borrow his pen and their fingers brushed for exactly 1.3 seconds. Now Jake was hosting the end-of-school bash at his house, and Maya's stomach performed more flips than an Olympic gymnast.

Her phone buzzed. *You coming?* – from Priya, her best friend who was already there.

Maya threw on her cover-up, grabbed her towel, and walked to Jake's house where music thumped against the windows. The backyard was transformed – fairy lights strung between trees, snacks everywhere, and there he was, standing by the pool, hair wet from a recent swim, laughing at something.

Then she saw it: Jake's baseball jersey from the team's championship game draped over a chair. The one where he'd hit the winning home run and the whole school went crazy. That was it – her opening line.

"Great game last week," she said, immediately wanting to die inside. Who says that at a pool party?

But Jake grinned. "You watched it?"

"Everyone watched it," Maya said, then corrected herself. "I mean, yeah. It was epic."

They talked for twenty minutes about baseball, school, and how his cat, unlike hers, actually liked water. Maya forgot about her hair. She forgot about feeling out of place. She was just... talking to him, like a normal person.

"You should come to my game next week," Jake said. "I can save you a seat."

Maybe freshman year wouldn't be so scary after all.
