chlorine and courage
The pool shimmered like liquid turquoise under the mid-July sun, but Maya's stomach did nervous backflips. She stood at the edge of the freshman party wearing her most minimal bikini—Way too much skin for someone who'd spent eighth grade in hoodies.
"Maya! Get in here!" Jordan waved from the deep end, surrounded by the popular crowd that somehow made everything look effortless. Even their laughter synced perfectly.
She'd been running from this moment since seventh grade, when Jordan accidentally called her "Mayo" in front of everyone. Three years later, it still stung.
Behind the pool house, she discovered something bizarre: her older brother Kai crouched behind a dumpster, FaceTiming someone about a "pyramid scheme that wasn't a pyramid scheme."
"Bro, I'm already Level Three," Kai whispered, eyes darting around. "My downline is crushing it. We're talking residual income for LIFE."
Maya rolled her eyes so hard it hurt. "Mom's gonna kill you."
"Whatever. You're just jealous I'm gonna be financially independent before college." Kai's phone buzzed. "Gotta go. My mentor's calling."
Maya retreated toward the pool, but Jordan intercepted her. "Hey, you coming in?"
"I..."
Then Jordan's little brother Caleb cannonballed nearby, splashing Maya's legs. "BEAR ATTACK!" he screamed, paddling toward Jordan with clawed hands.
Jordan laughed, shoving him away. "You're the worst, Caleb."
Something shifted. Jordan wasn't some untouchable god of social hierarchy—they were just a person dealing with an annoying little brother, same as Maya dealt with Kai's pyramid scheme obsession.
"Actually," Maya said, stepping toward the water, "I think I will."
She jumped. The cool water shocked her system, and when she surfaced, Jordan grinned. "Finally. Took you long enough."
Maybe freshman year wouldn't be so terrifying after all. Maybe she could finally stop running from everything. Maybe, just maybe, she could actually enjoy the party.
Caleb splashed her again. "BEAR ATTACK! PART TWO!"
Maya laughed, splashing back. "Oh, you're going down."
