Chlorine and Confidence
Maya stood at the edge of the pool, toes curled against the concrete. The July heat radiated off the backyard patio, but her stomach was doing backflips.
"You coming in or what?" Jake called from the water, droplets streaming from his messy brown hair that kept falling into his eyes. Maya had spent forty-five minutes this morning straightening hers, and now she kind of wished she hadn't bothered.
"Yeah, just... gotta take this first." She fished the vitamin D gummy from her pocket. Her mom was obsessed with her getting enough sunlight vitamins, which was ironic considering Maya spent half her life avoiding exactly that.
"You and your weird health kicks," Jake laughed, splashing water at her feet.
She popped the gummy in her mouth and cannonballed into the deep end, surfacing to the sound of everyone laughing. Good. At least she could own her awkwardness.
Later, they'd end up on the patio eating party food out of plastic bowls. Goldfish crackers and whatever else someone's mom had bought from Costco. Maya was mid-sentence about something that felt incredibly important when Jake's expression changed.
"You got a little..." He gestured at his own teeth, looking away like he was trying to be chill about it.
Spinach. From the veggie tray she'd hit earlier. Of course.
Her face burned hotter than the sun had made her shoulders. But then Jake just tossed her a napkin, still grinning like nothing was weird.
"Thanks," she mumbled, wiping her teeth.
"Anyway, you were saying?" he said, like the spinach incident had never happened.
Maya realized something in that moment: nobody was actually watching her as closely as she was watching herself. The perfect hair, the careful timing, the anxiety about seeming cool — it was all in her head.
"You know what? Never mind," she said, and actually meant it. Sometimes the best moments were the ones you didn't overthink.
Jake passed her the goldfish. "Want the rest?"
"Absolutely," Maya said, and for the first time all summer, she didn't worry about crumbs on her swimsuit.
