Chlorine and Confidence

Maya tugged at her swimsuit straps, feeling like everyone's eyes were x-raying her insecurity. The Taylor's pool party was the social event of the summer, and she'd spent forty-five minutes fixing her hair before leaving—only to have it frizz the moment she stepped outside.

"Yo Maya, you gonna swim or just stand there looking like a confused dog?" Jake called from the diving board, surrounded by his cool-person orbit.

Her face burned. Jake, with his perfect swimmer's build and hair that actually looked better wet.

"I'm good," Maya mumbled, faking a laugh. "Just... warming up."

Then she noticed Leo's little sister, Chloe, crouched by the patio furniture. She was cradling something weird-looking—a wrinkly, hairless cat that looked like it had seen better days.

"That's Cleopatra," Chloe whispered, like it was a state secret. "She's a sphinx cat. My aunt breeds them."

Maya blinked. The cat was ridiculous-looking, all folds and wrinkles, but Chloe held it like it was the most beautiful creature on earth. "She doesn't have any hair," Maya said.

"She doesn't need it," Chloe said defensively. "She's perfect anyway."

Something clicked in Maya's brain. This seventh grader got it. The cat didn't care about fitting in. It just existed, boldly and unapologetically.

"Hey." Maya's voice came out stronger than she expected. She turned toward the pool. "Jake! Since you're so concerned about my swimming form, race you to the other side."

Jake froze. "What?"

"You heard me. Unless you're scared to lose to someone who's been 'warming up' for five minutes."

The whole pool deck went quiet. Then someone yelled "BET!" and suddenly it was ON.

Maya dove in, chlorine stinging her eyes, hair plastering to her face like a wet mop, not caring at all. She didn't win—Jake had too much athletic training—but she didn't lose by much, and the look on his face when she actually challenged him was worth everything.

Later, dripping pool water all over the patio, Maya caught Chloe's eye. The sphinx cat was asleep in her arms.

Maya smiled, shaking her wet hair like she owned the place. Some things didn't need fixing to be perfect. Some things just needed to dive in.
