Chlorine and Complicity

Elena lay by the rooftop **pool**, the Miami heat wavering off the water's surface. She should have been enjoying this corporate retreat – the margaritas, the networking, the escape from their Chicago winter. Instead, she kept checking her **iPhone**, waiting for a message that would never come.

Marcus had disappeared an hour ago, claiming he needed a charging **cable** from their room. But Elena had seen their hotel room key sitting on the bar when she ordered her third drink. He wasn't coming back.

"Your husband's quite charismatic," said the woman beside her, offering a **vitamin** C supplement with a knowing smile. Elena took it automatically, her mind somewhere else entirely.

"He's not my husband anymore," she found herself saying. "He's a **spy**."

The woman raised an eyebrow, but Elena didn't elaborate. How could she explain that Marcus had been selling pharmaceutical research to their competitors for three years? That she'd known since last Tuesday, when she'd found the encrypted files on his laptop? That she'd convinced herself it wasn't true, because the alternative meant admitting she'd built a life on lies?

She'd been taking vitamins for sleep, for anxiety, for energy – trying to fix something that couldn't be fixed with supplements. The real deficiency wasn't nutritional.

Her phone finally buzzed. Not Marcus. It was their lawyer, confirming the whistleblower protection agreement she'd signed that morning. She'd turned him in. The FBI was probably arresting him right now, or maybe he'd already slipped away like he'd always threatened he could.

Elena stood up, the chlorine smell suddenly overwhelming. She dropped her iPhone in the pool – watched it sink through the turquoise water, little bubbles rising like tiny prayers.

"You okay?" the woman asked.

Elena smiled, and it felt like the first real thing she'd done in years. "I'm exactly where I need to be."
