Chlorine and Chaos

catswimmingvitamin

Maya's alarm blared at 5:00 AM like it had something personal against her. The first **swimming** practice of the school year, and she'd already mentally rehearsed her excuse about oversleeping. But her mom had other plans.

"You're not skipping, Maya. Coach Martinez emailed me."

"Ugh, fine." Maya grabbed her gym bag, already dreading the inevitable what-if-I'm-the-worst-one-there spiral that lived rent-free in her brain.

Their porch light flickered on, revealing the neighborhood's infamous stray **cat** — a scrappy orange tabby Maya secretly called Cheeto (never to his face, obviously). He sat there like he owned the place, watching with judgment in his yellow eyes.

"What? Never seen someone fail at 5 AM before?"

Cheeto meowed. Maya took it as solidarity.

The pool deck smelled like chlorine and teenage anxiety. Coach Martinez blew her whistle, and Maya positioned herself at lane 4, somewhere between the Olympic hopefuls and the I'm-literally-only-here-because-my-parents-made-me crowd.

"Alright team, new protocol this season!" Coach announced, all bounding energy while Maya's soul remained firmly horizontal. "We're starting each practice with a **vitamin** check!"

"A what now?" someone whispered.

"Multivitamins! Proper nutrition! Bring your bottles tomorrow!" She beamed like this wasn't totally unhinged behavior.

Maya's face burned. She'd forgotten hers at home. Obviously.

"Great," she muttered, already drafting the group chat message: if anyone asks, I'm totally not the vitamin delinquent.

But then Cheeto appeared on the pool fence, yowling like someone'd stepped on his tail. The entire team froze. Even Coach Martinez paused mid-whistle.

"Is that... a cat?"

"That's Cheeto," Maya said, before she could stop herself. Half the team cracked up. "What? I didn't name him! The neighbors did!"

"Cheeto," Coach Martinez repeated, barely containing laughter. "You know what? Anyone who forgot their vitamins gets a free pass today. Courtesy of Cheeto."

The orange tabby sat there, tail twitching, seemingly aware he'd just become a local legend.

After practice — Maya hadn't drowned, so she counted that as a win — Cheeto waited by the bike rack like a furry Uber driver demanding payment in tuna. She tossed him a treat from her bag, which he accepted with the dignity of a tiny, orange king.

"You're weird, cat. But thanks."

He head-butted her ankle. Maya took it as approval.

Her phone buzzed. New group chat name: 🏊‍♀️CHEETO'S SQUAD🧡

First message from that cute junior she'd been lowkey nervous about: you forgot your vitamins too didn't you

Maya grinned, typing back: absolutely not. I'm just naturally vitamin-deficient. It's my aesthetic.

His reply came instantly: same. wanna sit together at the meet next week?

She hit send before her brain could sabotage it: bet.

Sometimes the best moments weren't the ones you planned for. They were the ones involving judgmental cats, Coach Martinez's unhinged ideas, and group chats named after stray animals.

Not that she'd ever admit that to Cheeto. His ego was already big enough.
