Chlorine and Betrayal

Elena balanced her plate of wilted spinach and grilled chicken beside the hotel pool, watching the water's surface break under the moon's reflection. The annual wellness conference felt like a cruel joke now.

She'd suspected something was off when Marcus started asking too many questions about their prototype vitamin supplements—industry specifics that no marketing director should care about. But she'd ignored it, too distracted by their affair to notice the rot spreading beneath.

"You're going to eat that cold?" Marcus's voice cut through her thoughts. He stood poolside, still in his suit from the day's presentations. He looked like everything she'd wanted—sharp, successful, interested in her work and her body.

"Not hungry anymore." She set the plate down. "Corporate Security called me this morning. They found the encrypted emails you've been sending to NutriCorp. Our competitor."

The silence stretched between them, heavier than the humid air.

"I did it for us," Marcus said finally. "They offered me double. I was going to take you with me."

"As what? Your corporate spy partner?" Elena stood up, her voice trembling. "I trusted you. Not just with my work—with everything."

"People make choices, Elena. You chose your principles. I chose security." He stepped closer. "Come with me anyway. We could still—"

"No." She walked to the pool's edge, staring down at her distorted reflection. "Some things don't wash clean."

Behind her, Marcus laughed bitterly. "You think you're so pure. But we're all compromised eventually. It's just a matter of price."

Elena turned back to face him. "My price was never for sale."

The pool lights flickered on, illuminating the water like an artificial aquarium. Marcus watched her for a long moment, then walked away toward the hotel elevators without another word.

Elena sat back down, finally hungry. She ate her cold spinach while the pool's gentle waves lapped against the tiles, thinking about how some betrayals leave a taste that never really fades, no matter how many vitamins you take to pretend everything's fine.
