Chlorine and Betrayal

spyorangespinachpool

The corporate **pool** shimmered under the moonlight, that perfect blue that never existed in nature. Elena floated on her back, contemplating how much of her life had been spent pretending to be someone she wasn't. At thirty-five, she'd mastered the art of corporate espionage, but somewhere along the way, she'd forgotten who she'd been before becoming a **spy** for hire.

Marcus found her there, as she knew he would. His silhouette blocked the stars as he approached the water's edge, and she felt that familiar ache—the one that lived between her ribs, constantly reminding her of everything she'd sacrificed for this job.

"You ate the **orange**," he said, his voice low and resigned. "The one I left on your desk."

Elena treaded water, suddenly cold. "How did you know?"

"Because you always eat the center first. You leave the rind in a perfect spiral." He sat on the lounge chair, not meeting her eyes. "I didn't want to believe it, but last week—when the proposals leaked—" He finally looked at her. "You've been stealing company secrets for months, haven't you?"

The silence stretched between them like something physical. She thought about their dinner the night before, how she'd meticulously picked through her **spinach** salad, separating each leaf, separating herself from him with every careful bite.

"They offered me double," she said finally. "A fresh start. No more shadows."

"And us?" Marcus stood. "Were we just part of the cover?"

Elena pulled herself from the pool, water streaming down her body like all the lies she'd told. She stood dripping on the concrete, shivering despite the summer heat, and realized too late that some betrayals can't be undone, that some prices are too high even for someone who deals in secrets for a living.

Marcus didn't wait for an answer. He walked away, leaving her alone with the chlorine and the moon, and the terrible knowledge that she'd won exactly what she wanted—and lost everything that mattered.
