Chasing the Empty Palm

Maya's legs burned as she rounded the corner, the cross-country trail stretching ahead like an endless ribbon of dirt and doubt. Her dad's voice echoed in her head: "You're not pushing yourself hard enough, kiddo. The other girls are taking supplements. Maybe you should too." He'd slipped her a bottle of vitamin pills that morning, promising they'd give her "the edge."

The golden retriever that always hung out by the school fence—Coach called him Buster, but everyone knew he was just some neighborhood dog—trotted alongside her for a moment, tongue lolling, zero fucks given about split times or scholarship potential. Maya wanted to be that dog.

"Maya! Come on!" Chloe yelled from ahead, flanked by her squad of varsity mean girls. They were everything Maya wasn't: effortlessly fast, annoyingly perfect, and apparently immune to imposter syndrome. Chloe's Instagram was all aesthetic sunrise runs and caption-worthy motivation. Maya's life was mostly panic attacks in locker rooms and questioning everything.

Her phone buzzed in her pocket—probably another text from her dad asking if she'd taken the vitamin yet. She'd flushed them down the toilet that morning, but he didn't need to know. The pressure was suffocating, like running underwater while everyone else breathed easy.

Coach's palm smacked against the stopwatch at the finish line. " Garcia, you're holding back. I can see it."

Maybe she was. Or maybe she was just tired of running someone else's race.

That afternoon, Maya sat on her front porch with Buster sprawled across her feet. The dog lifted his head, soulful eyes meeting hers like he understood everything she couldn't say. Some random girl from school walked by and paused.

"Hey, you're Maya, right? I saw you at practice. You've got crazy endurance."

Maya blinked. "What?"

"Seriously. You never stop moving. It's inspiring." The girl smiled. "I'm Luna, by the way."

For the first time in forever, Maya's palm didn't feel sweaty when someone noticed her. Not because she was winning, but because she was still running. On her own terms.

"Wanna run with me tomorrow?" Maya found herself asking. "No pressure. No vitamins. Just... running."

Luna grinned. "Only if Buster can come too."

The golden retriever thumped his tail like hell yeah.
