Chasing Sunlight
The summer after sophomore year, Maya's older brother Jayden got involved with "SolarWave Wellness" – basically a pyramid scheme disguised as a lifestyle brand. He kept pushing these neon-yellow vitamin D gummies on everyone, claiming they'd "change your vibration" and help you "manifest abundance." Maya mostly rolled her eyes, but when Jayden promised she could make five hundred bucks a week just posting aesthetic photos with the products, she hesitated.
That afternoon, she found herself at Chloe's pool party, clutching a bottle of the gummies like they were contraband. The pool glittered turquoise in the sunlight, and already people were doing cannonballs off the diving board. Maya's stomach did that familiar twist – the social anxiety that had been her constant companion since middle school. She watched from the sidelines as kids she'd known since elementary school splashed and laughed, already forming those invisible social pyramids that defined high school hierarchy. Chloe waved at her from the shallow end, and Maya knew this was her chance.
"Hey! You made it!" Chloe paddled over, droplets clinging to her shoulders. "Want to try my new underwater playlist? I've got this waterproof speaker –"
"Actually," Maya heard herself saying, "I'm selling these vitamin supplements now. They're supposed to help with... energy and stuff. You interested?" The words tasted like shame in her mouth.
Chloe's expression flickered – just for a second – from genuine excitement to something like pity. "Oh, that's cool, Maya. My mom's already into that wellness stuff, but I'll ask her. Hey, you should come in the water! The temperature's actually decent today."
Later, as Maya sat on the pool edge with her feet dangling in the cool water, watching the sunset turn everything golden, she realized something. The real pyramid wasn't Jayden's lame MLM scheme – it was the one she kept building in her head, where she had to prove herself worthy before she could just enjoy moments like this. She kicked off her flip-flops and slid into the water, letting the day's embarrassment dissolve into chlorine and twilight.
Some things in life were worth chasing – sunlight, genuine connections, the feeling of belonging. But some things? Some things were just vitamin gummies in fancy packaging.
