Chasing Lightning in the Rain

Maya's Friday night was supposed to be Netflix and actual chill—like, literally hiding from the world while her friends posted stories from parties she wasn't invited to. Again. But then Barnaby, her rescue golden retriever mix, decided tonight was the night he'd finally figure out how to open the back gate.

"Barnaby! NO!" She was already running out the door in her mismatched pajamas, phone clutched in one hand like it contained her entire social life (it basically did). The rain had started pouring—typical for a Friday—and she could hear her mom calling from the living room about the cable guy coming tomorrow morning and something about the gate latch being broken since last week. Whatever. Details.

Her bare feet slapped against wet pavement as she followed Barnaby's familiar butthead pattern: straight toward the old elementary school playground. The storm was getting worse, electricity crackling in the air like static on a bad connection. And then—BAM. A massive lightning strike illuminated everything in this insane purple-white flash, and there he was.

Leo. From her AP Bio class. The one with the stupidly perfect smile who'd asked to borrow her notes last week and then returned them with a doodle of a coffee cup in the margin.

He was running too, chasing some tiny yappy dog that looked like it cost more than Maya's college fund. And for some reason, in that bizarre lightning-lit moment with rain plastering her hair to her face and her pajama situation becoming public knowledge, she started laughing. Like, actually laughing.

"Is that a Havanese?" she called out, somehow still moving while trying to catch Barnaby, who'd discovered the glory of mud puddles.

"His name is Pierre and he's a disaster," Leo yelled back, sounding equally out of breath. "Your dog has better taste in weather than mine does."

They both collapsed on the covered bench near the swings, dogs somehow contained (Pierre looking offended, Barnaby looking like he'd just won the canine Olympics). Rain hammered against the roof above them, and Maya's phone kept buzzing with notifications that suddenly seemed way less important.

"So," Leo said, wiping rain from his face and grinning like this wasn't the weirdest night ever. "You want to study for that bio test tomorrow? I still don't understand mitosis."

Maya smiled so hard her face actually hurt. The cable guy could wait. Her FOMO could wait. Right now, sitting here with two dogs and the cute bio kid while lightning flashed overhead? This was way better than any party she wasn't invited to.
