Charging Into The Unknown

Maya's iPhone flashed 3% battery. Of course. Right when Tyler finally texted back.

"Anyone have a lightning cable?" she called out over the bass-heavy trap music thumping through Ryan's living room.

Blank stares. Someone's cousin shrugged. Maya's chest tightened—the familiar FOMO spiral kicking in. She'd spent forty-five minutes on her eyeliner, scrolled through three Pinterest boards for outfit inspo, and now? She'd be that girl hugging the wall while everyone else lived their best lives.

She escaped toward the kitchen, clutching her dead phone like a lifeline. That's when she saw him—the quiet guy from her AP Bio class, whose name she thought might be Leo, standing at the counter eating papaya from a ceramic bowl. Like, straight-uppapaya chunks at a house party. Who does that?

"Your phone died too?" He held up his own dead iPhone. "Mine's been gone since nine. It's honestly kinda liberating."

Maya blinked. "You're not... freaked out? Like, what if someone posts something? What if Tyler—"

"Tyler from calc?" Leo raised an eyebrow. "He posted a shirtless mirror selfie at ten. You're not missing anything."

Maya's cheeks burned. Leo slid the papaya bowl toward her. "Try it. My host mom's Costa Rican. She swears it's a mood booster."

It tasted like sunshine and apology. Outside, actual lightning cracked the sky, illuminating everything through the kitchen window—a moment suspended in electric clarity.

"My charger's in my car," Leo said suddenly. "Want to charge together?"

And that was how Maya spent her Friday night: sitting cross-legged on a driveway, two phones sharing one lightning cable, watching a thunderstorm roll in while discussing everything from AP Bio anxiety to why papaya was criminally underrated. No Instagram stories. No filters. Just the first time she'd felt real in months.
