Charger Cord Confessions

Maya's iPhone died at 11:47 PM—exactly forty-three minutes before Jordan posted his first story since The Incident.

She lay in bed, zombie-walking through her mental replay of last week's cafeteria disaster. The running commentary in her head hadn't stopped since: *Why did you wave? He literally saw you trip over your own backpack.*

No cable meant no answers. No checking if Jordan's story was a subtweet. No watching his aura flicker from gray to online.

Her room felt too quiet without the familiar glow. She grabbed her ancient iPad—her dad's old hand-me-down from 2016—and tiptoed downstairs to the kitchen. Her mom was asleep on the couch, HGJ still murmuring from the TV.

"Maya?" Her mom stirred, blinking awake. "Everything okay?"

"Just need a charger." Maya held up the iPad like evidence.

Her mom laughed softly. "You kids. Can't go three minutes without being plugged in."

"It's not about being plugged," Maya whispered, embarrassed by how real it felt. "It's about missing things."

"Like what?"

Maya sank into the armchair. "Like... knowing if I'm still part of things. If people forget me when I'm offline."

Her mom's expression softened. "Honey, nobody forgets you in seven hours. You're not a spy operation."

Maya thought about it. Jordan's post. Chloe's group chat that had been suspiciously quiet since she left school early Friday with a migraine. The feeling that she was always running to catch up, never quite arriving.

"Maybe I'm not spying on them," she said slowly. "Maybe I'm spying on myself. Checking if I still exist when I'm not performing."

Her mom sat up, fully awake now. "Performing what?"

"The version of me that gets likes. The one who says the right thing. Posts the right aesthetic." Maya's voice cracked. "What if nobody likes the offline version?"

"You know what?" Her mom stood up and walked to the kitchen drawer. She returned with a tangled charging cable and plugged it into Maya's iPad. "Here's the thing about cables—they tether you, sure. But they also recharge you."

The iPad screen flickered to life. Notifications flooded in. Five from the group chat. Two from Jordan.

Maya's hand hovered over the screen.

"Open them," her mom said. "Or don't. But the real Maya exists either way."

The messages weren't what she expected. *Chloe: We were worried about you!!* *Jordan: Hope you feel better, cafeteria wasn't the same without you*

She wasn't invisible. She wasn't performing. She was just a person who people actually noticed when she was gone.

The cable glowed orange in the dark kitchen, charging more than just her device.

"Thanks, Mom."

"Anytime. Now go sleep—you look like a walking zombie."

Maya laughed and headed upstairs, iPhone still dead, heart suddenly full.
