Chaos Theory at Maya's House
I never thought my Friday night would turn into a social disaster, but here we are. Maya's house party was supposed to be chill—the kind where you could actually hear people talk, but the moment I walked in, my social anxiety spiked like crazy. I was wearing this stupid orange hoodie that Maya said made me look like a traffic cone, but she swore it was my brand color. Whatever that meant.
The main problem? Samantha was there. Samantha, whose instagram stories are literally aesthetic goals. Samantha, who I've had a hopeless crush on since freshman year. She was standing near the snack table like she owned the place, and I was hovering in the doorway like a lost NPC.
Then came the cat incident. Maya's cat, Midas—who apparently has zero boundaries—decided my hoodie was his new throne. I'm standing there with a golden cat draped across my shoulders like I'm some sort of Egyptian pharaoh, and Sam walks over.
"Nice look," she says, actually smiling. "Very Egyptian goddess vibes."
My brain short-circuited. "Thanks? He just sort of... claimed me."
"That's how cats work," she laughs. "They pick you, you don't pick them."
We talked for twenty minutes about everything and nothing—her weird obsession with conspiracy theories, my disastrous attempt at baking last week, how both our dogs are basic but lovable. It was the most normal conversation I'd ever had with a crush, and I was mentally doing cartwheels.
Then her phone buzzed. Some pyramid scheme DM from a random. "Ugh, another 'hey girl' message," she groaned, showing me the screen. "They're like zombies—they just keep coming."
"Block and move on," I said, feeling strangely confident.
"Wise words," she grinned, and for a second, I thought she might actually be interested in me. Like, actually interested.
Later that night, as Midas finally abandoned his pharaoh pose for more comfortable territory, I realized something: maybe being yourself—orange hoodie disasters, cat throne situations, and all—isn't the worst strategy. Maybe the real pyramid scheme isn't the ones in your DMs, but the one you build in your head about how impossible it all is.
Samantha texted me the next morning. "Same orange hoodie next Friday?"
I'm still screaming internally.
