Chaos Before the Corsage
Maya's hands wouldn't stop shaking as she stared at herself in the mirror. The junior prom was in two hours, and her hair had declared war.
"You've got this," she whispered, but the bathroom mirror reflected a girl who looked like she'd survived a wind tunnel. Her normally sleek brown curls were exploding in every direction, defying gravity and her expensive styling products.
Her golden retriever, Buster, nudged the door open with his nose, tail thumping against the doorframe. He sensed her panic and offered moral support by drooling on her velvet dress, which was hanging on the back of the door.
"Buster, no!"
Maya's phone buzzed. Her group chat was blowing up.
"u ready??" - Sam
"HAHA someone post pics" - Jordan
She'd been crushing on Jordan since seventh period English, when they'd been paired for that awful poetry project. Tonight, Jordan had actually agreed to save a dance for her. Maybe two.
Maya reached for her emergency stash: a neon-orange energy drink her mom called "liquid poison" but which Maya swore contained some secret vitamin that transformed her from awkward sophomore to someone capable of normal human conversation.
Then disaster struck.
As she turned, her heel caught on something behind her—her dad's charging cable, snaked across the floor like a lazy snake. She stumbled, grabbing the bathroom counter. The energy drink flew from her hand. Orange liquid splashed across the white tile, splattering her dress, her shoes, somehow even getting in her hair.
Buster decided this was the perfect moment to shake himself vigorously, spraying droplets everywhere.
"ARE YOU KIDDING ME?"
Maya slid down to the floor, sitting in the orange puddle, and started laughing. Because what else could she do? Her hair was a disaster, her dress was stained, her dog was a menace, and she was probably going to humiliate herself in front of Jordan anyway.
Her mom appeared in the doorway, surveying the chaos. "Well," she said, cracking a smile. "At least you'll have a story to tell."
And suddenly, Maya realized she was right. The hair could be fixed. The dress could be spot-cleaned. But this moment—this ridiculous, messy, perfect moment—was real. She grabbed her phone, snapped a selfie with Buster, and sent it to the group chat.
"prom prep going great thx for asking"
Sam replied instantly: "lmao see u in 20"
Jordan sent: "u always pull it off. save me a dance?"
Maya's hands stopped shaking. She'd survive tonight. She might even have fun.
