Championship Blender
The blender screamed like a dying cat as Maya's breakfast experiment went horribly wrong. Papaya chunks spun violently against spinach leaves, creating a sludge that looked less like 'morning wellness' and more like 'swamp thing in a glass.'
"Maya, hurry! You'll be late for the championship!" her mom yelled from downstairs.
"Coming!" Maya sighed, grabbing her vitamin gummies and the smoothie. Junior year was already exhausting, and tryouts for the varsity academic team were today. She'd been prepping all week—flashcards, practice tests, the whole overachiever routine.
The morning got worse when her phone buzzed in homeroom.
*Brooklyn:* U comin 2 lunch?
*Maya:* Can't. Studying.
*Brooklyn:* U always studying. Miss u 🙁
Maya guiltily typed *miss u 2* then deleted it. Brooklyn was her best friend since elementary, but ever since Maya started hanging with the academic bowl crowd, things felt... different. Not bad different, just distant. Like she was floating between worlds, belonging fully to neither.
At lunch, Maya sat alone with her spinach-papaya disaster and history notes. The cafeteria noise washed over her—laughter, cliques forming and reforming with the ruthlessness of teenage social dynamics. She watched Brooklyn at a nearby table, animatedly talking with the theater crew. Brooklyn caught her eye and waved. Maya waved back, a weird ache in her chest.
"Hey."
Maya jumped. Tyler, the varsity quarterback, slid into the seat across from her. Tyler, who she'd barely spoken to since freshman year.
"My bull keeps escaping," Tyler said, shaking his head. "My neighbors are gonna file a complaint at this rate."
"You... have a bull?"
"Miniature bull. My sister's 4H project. That thing is a Houdini." He leaned in. "Look, I know this is random, but you're taking AP Bio, right?"
Maya nodded, confused.
"I need a tutor. Like, desperately. I'm failing, and if I don't pass, I'm off the football team." He actually looked embarrassed. "Coach said you'd be good at explaining stuff."
Maya stared. Tyler, asking HER for help? The same Tyler whose friends sometimes made fun of the 'nerd crowd'?
"I, uh... yeah. I could tutor. Tuesdays and Thursdays?"
Tyler's whole face relaxed. "You're a lifesaver. Seriously." He hesitated. "Hey, you should sit with us sometime. My friends talk a lot of trash, but they're not actually terrible."
He left, and Maya sat there stunned. Her phone buzzed again.
*Brooklyn:* Tyler Davis just talked to u didn't he
*Maya:* ...how did you know
*Brooklyn:* I know everything 😘 also I told him u were smart come sit w us
Maya looked at Brooklyn's table. Brooklyn was grinning and pointing to an empty seat next to her.
The smoothie actually tasted okay now. Maybe today wouldn't be so terrible after all.
