caught between the storm and the game

Mia's fingers fumbled with the zipper of her hoodie as she sat in the bleachers, heart doing that stupid fluttery thing it always did around Lucas. He was three rows down, laughing at something his friends said, completely unaware she existed. Classic.

"You're staring again," Kayla whispered, nudging her with an elbow. "Just talk to him already."

"I can't," Mia muttered, gripping her childhood good luck bear in her pocket like a lifeline. "Not with everyone watching."

The baseball game was tied, bottom of the ninth, everything riding on this last at-bat. The energy was electric - or maybe that was just the lightning flickering in the distance, purple veins across a bruise-colored sky. The storm was supposed to miss them, but the air felt thick and wrong, like holding your breath too long.

Then Lucas's dog-a chaotic golden retriever named Bolt-burst onto the field from nowhere, chasing a foul ball like his life depended on it. The crowd went wild, but Mia saw what nobody else did: Lucas was already moving, jumping the fence to chase him.

A massive crack of thunder shook the stadium. Lightning struck the scoreboard, sparks raining down. People screamed, scattering. In the chaos, Mia saw something that made her blood run cold - Lucas and Bolt were headed straight toward the woods behind left field, where wildlife sightings had been all over social media. Where a bear had been spotted yesterday.

Her legs moved before her brain could register what she was doing.

"LUCAS!" she screamed, vaulting over the bleacher railing. "STOP!"

He froze, Bolt cowering between his legs. Ten yards beyond them, massive and shadow-dark against the storm, a bear rose on its hind legs.

The moment stretched forever. Mia's heart hammered. She could run. She could let someone else handle it. But then Lucas looked back, and their eyes met through the rain that had started falling, and she knew.

"Hey!" she yelled, voice cracking but steady. "HEY! OVER HERE!"

She grabbed her phone, turned on the flashlight, waved it wildly. The bear turned, confused by the sudden light, then lumbered away into the trees. Lucas scrambled back, Bolt trembling against his chest.

They sat on the wet concrete as paramedics checked everyone over, his jacket around her shoulders.

"You saved my life," he said, quiet enough that only she could hear.

Mia's fingers found her lucky bear in her pocket. "Just returning the favor," she smiled.

The game was called, but she didn't care.
