Catfish Champion
Maya's fingers hovered over her iPhone screen, heart doing that weird fluttery thing whenever Jake's profile picture popped up. Three weeks of texting, and still she hadn't mentioned she played padel. What if he thought it was cringe? What if he imagined her as some basic girl who only cared about TikTok and getting the perfect selfie?
"You're spiraling again," said Chloe, dropping onto the bed beside her. "Just invite him to watch your tournament tomorrow. If he's worth it, he'll think it's lowkey cool that you're basically a padel prodigy."
Maya groaned into her pillow. Her phone buzzed. Jake.
'Want to hang after school tmrw?'
Her thumbs trembled as she typed. 'Can't! Padel tournament. But you could come watch??'
Delete. Rewrite. 'Actually I have this thing...'
Before she could overthink it again, something soft brushed against her ankle. Mittens, her cat, gave one of those judgmental meows that meant "you're being ridiculous."
"You're right," Maya told the cat. "I'm going all in."
The next day, Maya stepped onto the court, stomach doing backflips. And there he was, sitting in the bleachers, looking unfairly cute in his varsity jacket. Her phone buzzed in her bag—she'd left it on the bench, strict tournament rules.
Game point. Maya's racket connected with the ball, sending it soaring past her opponent's desperate lunge. Winner!
But the real victory came after. Jake met her at the net, grinning.
"You were insane," he said. "I had no idea you were so good at padel. That's... actually really hot."
Maya's face burned, but not from embarrassment this time. Sometimes the most unexpected parts of yourself turn out to be exactly what someone else is looking for. And sometimes, even a cat knows you're overcomplicating things.
