Catfish at the Pool Party

Marcus stood at the edge of the pool party, clutching his mom's Tupperware like it was a grenade. Inside: papaya chunks. Because apparently, fresh fruit was gonna help him fit in with the junior class elite.

He'd spent three weeks perfecting his swimming technique in his bathtub. No cap. The internet said fake it 'til you make it, but Marcus was pretty sure the internet didn't know Tyler Jenkins was hosting this thing.

Tyler, whose dad owned three car dealerships. Tyler, who'd called Marcus "that quiet kid" in homeroom for three years straight.

"Yo Marcus!" Tyler shouted, cannonballing into the deep end. "Get in or bounce!"

The papaya Tupperware slipped.

Time slowed. Marcus lunged—grabbed it—triumph.

Until something brushed his leg. A flash of orange fur. His sister's emotional support cat, Pumpkin, had escaped the house again and was now FLOATING in the pool.

"Is that... a cat?" Someone asked.

Pumpkin paddled toward Tyler like she owned the place. Tyler scrambled backward like he'd seen a ghost. "Yo, wtf is happening?!"

"That's my cat," Marcus said, and then—because his brain had clearly left the chat—he added, "She's basically a fish."

"A bull catfish," someone whispered. "Based."

The pool erupted. Marcus waded in, scooped up Pumpkin, and emerged to applause. He stood there, dripping wet, holding a furious orange cat and a container of papaya, while the junior class chanted his name.

Tyler Jenkins actually high-fived him. "Bro, no way you just went beast mode for your cat. That's hardcore."

Marcus realized something: he hadn't needed to fake anything. The papaya was still weird, sure. But saving a swimming cat from drowning in front of the whole class? That was certified legendary behavior.

He took a bite of the papaya. "Yeah," he said. "I'm basically a superhero now."

"No cap," Tyler agreed.

And just like that, Marcus went from "that quiet kid" to the guy who saved Pumpkin from the deep end. Sometimes, you don't find your vibe—you just have to dive in and let the cat do the rest.
