Catching Lightning
Maya stood by the edge of the pool, clutching her solo cup of flat soda like it was a lifeline. The McKinley High social pyramid stretched before her in full force—Jake and his varsity friends occupying the prime loungers, the rest of us orbiting awkwardly around the edges. Even in a bikini, she felt invisible.
"Hey, Earth to Maya." Chloe nudged her, nearly making her spill. "You okay? You look like you're calculating escape routes."
"My mom made me take this vitamin D supplement before I left," Maya muttered, gesturing to her phone where a reminder still glowed. "Said I've been inside too much this summer. Which, fair, but who takes vitamins before a pool party?"
Chloe snorted. "Only you, genius. Only you."
Then she spotted him across the pool—Lucas from her history class, sitting away from the varsity crowd, looking equally out of place. Their eyes caught, and something electric flashed between them, sudden and startling.
Lightning cracked across the summer sky, purple veins threading through clouds that had been sneaking up all afternoon. The pool surface shivered.
"Everyone out!" Jake's voice boomed. "Storm's coming!"
Maya grabbed her towel, but Lucas was already there, offering her a hand. "Hey," he said, awkward and endearing. "I, uh, liked your presentation on World War II. The part about resistance fighters? It was actually pretty cool."
Vitamin D forgotten, social pyramid dissolved, Maya smiled as raindrops started falling around them. "Thanks. I worked really hard on it."
"Want to wait out the storm under the porch overhang?" Lucas asked. "I have Gushers."
"Absolutely." She followed him through the gathering crowd, heart doing something impossible and wonderful—as if she'd just caught lightning in a bottle, and it was finally, finally hers.
