Cat's Social Pyramid Climb

Cat's palms were literally sweating through her ripped black fishnets as she stood at the edge of the pool party. The water rippled with perfect Instagram aesthetic, reflecting string lights and the faces of people who'd been ignoring her since freshman year. This was it — her chance to finally level up in the social pyramid that ruled Northwood High.

"Cat! You coming in?" Maya, the resident sphinx of the junior class, beckoned from the shallow end. Maya with her cryptic captions and flawless hair that somehow always looked like she'd just emerged from a salon. Maya who sat at the apex of the pyramid, surrounded by her court of lesser royalty.

Cat adjusted her septum ring and nodded. She'd been grinding for this moment all semester — dropping sick edits, curating her feed, accepting every invite, even the ones that felt hella performative. She was done being background noise in her own life.

"Truth or dare," someone called out, and suddenly all eyes were on her. That's when it happened. A waterproof speaker nearby blasted a remix so cringe it made her whole body cringe, and someone yelled "catfish!" — not at her, but the irony hit like a brick. All this performative climbing, and for what? To become another sphinx guarding the pyramid's entrance, doling out validation like some kind of social gatekeeper?

Cat looked at the water, at Maya watching her with those sphinx eyes, at the palm trees swaying against the perfect LA sunset. She thought about her real life — late-night gaming sessions with friends who'd never make her prove herself, weird art projects that actually meant something, the authentic mess of being seventeen and figuring it out.

She walked away from the pool, palms finally dry. Let them have their pyramid. Cat was building something real.
