Cat Hat Court King

Max's vintage bucket hat sat crooked on his head, shielding eyes that had seen too many 3 AM gaming sessions. The hat was his armor—without it, he felt naked, exposed to the judgmental gaze of every polished varsity athlete at Oak Creek High.

"You coming to padel today?" Jenna asked, leaning against his locker. She'd been trying to get him to join the club for weeks. Padel was like tennis meets squash, apparently trending on TikTok, which meant everyone was suddenly obsessed.

"I'll think about it," Max mumbled, same as always.

Truth was, he sucked at sports. Always had. But the real problem? His mom's cat, Bear, had destroyed his sneakers last week. Like, actually chewed through the laces and part of the sole. Bear was a rescue with issues, okay? The cat had been through some stuff.

"Your cat's name is Bear?" Jenna laughed when he finally admitted why he couldn't make practice. "That's actually kind of iconic."

Her response caught him off guard. He'd expected mockery.

"I have extra gear," she said. "And the club's not like, super intense or whatever. We mostly just vibe and hit balls."

So Max showed up. Nervous as hell. Hat pulled low, wearing Jenna's slightly-too-small court shoes that pinched his toes.

And something weird happened. He didn't completely embarrass himself. His gaming reflexes translated surprisingly well to padel—quick reads, fast hands. By the third game, he actually returned a serve that made the captain go "damn."

"Not bad for a gamer," Jenna said afterward, bumping his shoulder. "Next time, bring Bear for good luck."

Max walked home with his hat actually straight for once, feeling like maybe, just maybe, high school wouldn't completely suck. The cat hadn't just destroyed his sneakers—he'd accidentally helped Max find his people.
