Cannonballs & Papaya Skins
Maya's thumb hovered over the screen, her iPhone lighting up with another group chat notification. *Pool party @ Jake's. 2 PM. Everyone coming.*
She stared at her reflection in the black mirror. Her curls were frizzy, her swimsuit was last year's style, and the thought of diving into Jake's crystal-blue pool with the popular crowd made her stomach do backflips.
"You going?" Her little brother Leo appeared in the doorway, holding something alien-looking and orange.
"Probably not."
"More papaya for me then." He took a massive bite, juice dripping down his chin. "Your loss. It's literally fire."
Maya rolled her eyes but something shifted. Since when did her brother become the adventurous one? Since when did she let fear of awkward pool games and shallow gossip keep her from living?
Two hours later, she stood at the edge of Jake's pool, heart pounding against her ribs. The water sparkled like diamonds in the afternoon sun. Laughter rippled across the backyard. Someone cannonballed behind her, sending a splash her way.
"Maya!" Jake waved from the deep end. "Get in here!"
She hesitated. Then remembered Leo's papaya-stained grin, the way he'd just gone for it without overthinking everything.
Maya pulled her iPhone from her pocket and tossed it onto a lawn chair. Not checking notifications. Not crafting perfect responses. Just living.
She jumped.
The water swallowed her whole—cool and shocking and perfect. When she broke the surface, gasping and grinning, someone yelled: "Finally!" and someone else high-fived her sopping wet hand.
Later, stomach rumbling, Maya found herself at the snack table where a bowl of papaya chunks sat ignored beside the usual chips and cookies. She speared one with a toothpick.
"Weird choice," someone said beside her. It was Cassie, the girl Maya had been secretly intimidated by since seventh grade.
"Yeah," Maya said, chewing thoughtfully. "But my brother says it's fire."
Cassie laughed. "Your brother's right." She snagged a piece. "I'm Cassie, by the way."
"Maya."
"Cool. Wanna play chicken fight? Jake and Tyler need opponents."
Maya grinned, water still dripping from her hair. "Literally yes."
That night, Maya's phone buzzed with a new message from Cassie. *Today was actually fun. We should hang again.*
Maya replied without overthinking it, without deleting and rewriting three times. And then she texted Leo: *You were right about the papaya.*
His response came instantly: *Told you. It's literally fire.*
Maybe this summer wouldn't be so bad after all.
