Cable to Wild

Zara had perfected the art of being invisible at Northwood High. Fade into the lockers, dodge eye contact, survive until 3:15. But everything changed the day she ditched detention to follow the orange construction **cable** snaking behind the gym.

She'd been working up the nerve for weeks. Her guidance counselor called it "acting out," but Zara called it finally feeling something. The cable led past the tennis courts, tangled through overgrown ivy, and vanished into what everyone called "The Dead Zone"—an abandoned corner of school property where the WiFi died and rules didn't apply.

There, hidden between rusted bleachers and a crumbling brick wall, someone had built a secret **padel** court.

Zara's breath caught. A lanky guy with messy dark hair was playing against himself, his neon orange sweatband glowing in the afternoon sun. He moved like liquid—effortless, confident, completely unbothered by anyone watching.

Because no one was watching. That was the point.

"You're the new girl from Mr. Harrison's AP English," he said, not turning around. His voice was warm, like he'd been expecting her. "The one who wrote that essay about how metaphors are basically lies."

Zara froze. "You read my paper?"

"I'm the TA." Finally, he faced her, grinning. His eyes were bright amber, genuinely amused. "I'm Leo. And you've been staring at this court for like twenty minutes from the library window."

Her face burned. "I wasn't—"

"It's cool." Leo tossed her a racquet. "Wanna play?"

Zara caught it instinctively. The grip felt perfect in her hands, like she'd been waiting for this moment her whole life. "I don't know how."

"That's the point." Leo's grin widened, almost predatory but not mean—clever, like he knew something she didn't. "Nobody here knows what they're doing. That's why it's perfect."

Her phone buzzed in her pocket—her mom, probably wondering where she was. The **cable** she'd followed lay behind her, a tether to everything she was supposed to be. Ahead of her, this **padel** court and this strange boy who'd noticed her without making her feel invisible.

"They call me **Fox**," Leo said softly, reading her mind. "Because I always find the loopholes. You wanna know what I figured out?" He stepped closer, his amber eyes intense. "Nobody's actually watching. We're all just pretending they are."

Zara's heart hammered against her ribs. She dropped her backpack on the ground and stepped onto the court.

"Teach me," she said.

Fox smiled like he'd been waiting for someone to finally say yes. "First lesson: You stop being who they expect, you might actually like who you become."

Zara's phone buzzed again. She ignored it.
