Cable to the Sphinx's Secret Pool
Lily knelt by the old stone well in her grandmother's garden, her golden retriever Buster nudging her hand with his wet nose. Something glinted in the depths—not a coin, but a thick silver cable that seemed to shimmer with its own light.
"What do you see, boy?" she whispered, giving Buster's floppy ears a scratch.
The cable moved. It wasn't just lying there—it was beckoning. Lily's heart raced as she gave it a gentle tug. The ground trembled, and stone stairs spiraled down into darkness, illuminated by the cable's magical glow.
Buster barked once, tail wagging. Together they descended.
At the bottom stood a creature with the body of a lion and the head of a wise woman. A sphinx!
"Welcome, young one," she rumbled, her voice like distant thunder. "I am Cleo, keeper of the Wonder Pool. But I cannot leave my post, for my friend Zom has fallen ill."
From behind a crystal formation shuffled a small green figure—a zombie, but not a scary one. Zom wore a polka-dot bow tie and looked more confused than frightening.
"I just want to swim," Zom said sadly, "but the magic pool only opens for those who solve riddles. My zombie brain is too slow."
Lily's eyes widened. A pool! A magical, sphinx-guarded pool!
"I can help!" Lily exclaimed. "I love riddles!"
Cleo smiled warmly. "Then listen well: I have cities, but no houses. I have mountains, but no trees. I have water, but no fish. What am I?"
Lily thought hard, while Buster sat patiently, his golden fur gleaming in the cave's soft light. A map! Maps showed cities and mountains and blue rivers, but nothing was real...
"A map!" Lily cried out.
Cleo nodded, and the crystal pool before them began to glow with swirling rainbow colors. Zom did a happy little dance.
"Thank you!" Zom cheered. "Now we can all play together!"
And so they spent the afternoon splashing in the warm, magical water—Lily, Buster, Zom the friendly zombie, and even Cleo, who had learned that sometimes, friends come in the most unexpected packages. When it was time to leave, Cleo pressed a small crystal into Lily's hand.
"Remember," the sphinx said wisely, "friendship is the greatest magic of all. It opens doors that riddles cannot."
As Lily climbed back up the silver cable, Buster following closely, she knew this summer would be full of adventures—and that the best ones were the ones shared with friends, whether they had fur, scales, or green skin.
