Cable to the Shoreline

The Ethernet cable lay coiled like a black snake across Maya's beige carpet while her mom shouted that dinner was ready. Typical Friday night for a freshman—hiding in your room while the older kids lived their best lives.

Maya clicked send on the Instagram DM to Jordan. Her thumb hovered over the screen, heart doing that nervous flutter thing.

"You good?" Jordan had replied to her story about the failed cable setup.

"My Wi-Fi is giving major depression vibes," she typed back.

His typing bubbles appeared. Disappeared. Appeared again.

"Want help? I'm literally five minutes away."

Maya's pulse jumped. She'd been lowkey crushing on Jordan since lacrosse season, when he'd complemented her goal celebration. But Jordan was a junior. He drove. He had parties that actually included people instead of just Netflix and anxiety.

Her palm was literally sweating as she typed: "Yes please."

Nine minutes later, her doorbell rang.

Maya's room felt suddenly too small with Jordan there, all long legs and grey sweatshirt and that inexplicable calmness that confident people just radiated. He knelt by her router, unravelling the tangled cable like it was the simplest thing in the world.

"Your connection's been bugging out all week, huh?" Jordan glanced back, and Maya forgot how to breathe for a second.

"Yeah. My ISP is ghosting me."

Jordan laughed, and Maya felt it in her chest.

After the cable was finally connected and her Wi-Fi stopped doing the sad loading face, Jordan lingered.

"So," he said, leaning against her doorframe. "A bunch of us are hitting the shoreline tonight. Bonfire stuff. You should come."

Maya's mind went blank. Then: "Like... with everyone?"

"Yeah. Why not? You're cool."

Later that night, Maya stood by the water, watching flames lick at the sky. Her palm found Jordan's in the darkness, and when he squeezed back, she thought: sometimes the worst Wi-Fi signal leads to the strongest connection.

And sometimes, a tangled cable is just the beginning of everything.
