Cable to Nowhere

The charging cable lay frayed across her desk like a dead snake, its white casing split open to expose copper veins. Elena stared at it at 2 AM, her iPhone screen illuminating the dark office with another email from David. Subject: Re: Us.

She'd been running from that conversation for three weeks. Literally running—five miles every morning before work, vitamin D supplements on her nightstand to combat the fluorescent lights, water bottle always full, always present. The ritual kept her sane.

Now David wanted to talk. Again.

Her phone chimed. The cable barely held a charge anymore, much like them. She remembered how they'd met at a conference two years ago, his presentation on workplace productivity metrics, her enthusiastic questions during Q&A. The connection had been electric then—real, not this thin copper thread stretched across months of cancelled dates and unanswered texts.

Elena stood and walked to the window. The city below flickered with countless other lives, countless other people staring at screens, waiting for messages, running from or toward something. She pressed her palm against the cold glass.

Her vitamin bottle sat on her desk next to a framed photo from their trip to Barcelona. They looked happy. She didn't remember feeling happy, just tired. Just like she didn't remember the last time David had asked how she was, really asked, instead of complaining about his commute or his boss.

The iPhone screen dimmed. David's email remained unopened.

Elena returned to her desk, wrapped the broken cable around her fingers, and dropped it into the trash bin. Then she opened her email, selected David's message, and hit delete.

She grabbed her water bottle and walked out of the office, not running anymore. Just walking, steady and sure, toward whatever came next.
