Cable to Nowhere
The HDMI cable lay coiled like a dead snake on the hotel room carpet, its ends fraying where Mal had chewed through the insulation three years ago. Elena stared at it, remembering how her ex had laughed, destroying the one connection that brought the outside world into their apartment. Now she was here, at this corporate retreat in Palm Springs, supposed to be networking and refreshing her personal brand.
Instead, she stood on her balcony in the too-thick robe, sweating through the fabric. Below, the resort's pool glowed an artificial blue, the water perfectly still. No one was swimming at 2 AM. The palm trees lining the perimeter cast long, skeletal shadows across the concrete, their fronds motionless in the stagnant heat.
She'd come here to escape the apartment that still smelled faintly of Mal's cheap cologne and the questions everyone kept asking. Are you okay? Have you tried dating apps? You're thirty-five, Elena, time is a luxury you can't afford.
The man in room 312 had offered her his spare cable at the mixer earlier. "I work in tech," he'd said, with that careful smile that meant he was also drowning, just better at hiding it. "Got spares of everything. Cables, chargers, excuses."
She'd almost said yes. Almost asked him up, almost let him tell her about his divorce or his dead mother or whatever sob story he used to make himself interesting. Instead she'd come back here, to stare at a cable that didn't work and a pool she wouldn't enter.
Her palms were sweating against the railing. That's what happened when you spent three years with someone who made you doubt your own judgment. You forgot how to trust. How to swim without someone holding your head above water.
Elena picked up the cable, felt the rough texture of the exposed wires. Tomorrow she'd buy a new one. Tomorrow she'd check out of this ridiculous resort and go back to her life, her work, the slow business of becoming whole again. But tonight, she stood watching the water, wanting to dive in, wanting to feel something that wasn't manufactured or mediated or explained away.
The palm trees rustled, a sudden breath of wind from the desert. She closed her eyes and imagined what it would feel like to be weightless, if only for a moment.
