Cable to Nowhere

The hotel pool was empty at 3 AM, which was exactly why Mara chose it. She'd spent the last three hours swimming laps, counting strokes like she used to count their money before David's "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity" became a federal investigation. Now she was just swimming through the wreckage of a fourteen-year marriage.

She pulled herself from the water, dripping onto the concrete deck where her phone glowed with missed calls. David. Always David. His latest message: "The lawyers say we can still save the house if you come back. Please, Mara."

Mara laughed bitterly, the sound echoing off the tile walls. Save the house. The house they'd bought with profits from his pyramid scheme, the one he'd sworn was legitimate multi-level marketing. He'd built his lies carefully, layer by layer like some ancient monument to his own greed, and she'd been standing at the base cheering him on.

She'd been the one to cable their life savings to that offshore account. She'd been the one to recruit her friends, her coworkers, her own sister. Now they were all strangers who crossed the street when they saw her coming.

The pool lights flickered — a loose connection, maybe. Everything was loose these days. Connections. Trust. The careful architecture of her belief that David was building them an empire, not digging them a grave.

Her phone vibrated again. Not David this time. Her sister, the one who'd lost her teaching savings because of Mara. "Mom's in the hospital. Heart attack. She's asking for you."

Mara stared at the screen until it went dark. Then she picked up her room key from the lounge chair and walked toward the elevator. She wasn't ready to go home, but some things couldn't wait for her to finish drowning herself in chlorinated regret. Some debts had to be paid face to face.

The cable car to the mainland didn't start running until dawn. She had three hours to decide who she was going to be when the sun came up.
