Cable to Nothing

The coaxial cable lay coiled on the floor like a dead snake, its copper heart exposed where she'd chewed through the insulation. Elena stared at it, the frayed wire echoing the state of her marriage.

"She was old," Marcus said, defensive in that way he'd become lately β€” everything justification, everything temporary.

"She was seventeen, Marcus."

He was already running his excuses, the same rhythm he'd used when he lost his job, when he forgot their anniversary, when he'd started sleeping in the guest room. The cat had been there before all of it, through their wedding, through her mother's death, through the decade of false starts that comprised their life together.

Elena knelt and gathered the cable into her hands. Beneath the TV stand, she found it: the cat's toy mouse, half-eaten, next to a desiccated piece of spinach that had fallen from Marcus's lunch three days ago. The domestic debris of a life that was slowly decomposing around them.

"I'll get a new one," he said. "A kitten."

"We're forty-two, Marcus. We don't get to start over."

She thought of Sarah, her friend from college, who'd left her husband last year. "It's not about starting over," Sarah had said over drinks. "It's about stopping the running. Staying somewhere long enough to feel it."

Elena stood up, the cable still in her hand. For the first time in months, she saw Marcus clearly β€” not as the man who'd disappointed her, but as someone running from his own disappointments, both of them moving in circles, neither brave enough to stop.

"The cat didn't chew that," she said quietly. "She didn't have teeth left."

Marcus's face changed. Something cracked.

"Then whatβ€”"

"I don't know," she said. "But I think we need to find out."

The cable hung between them, loose and useless. For the first time in months, neither of them looked away.
