Cable Ties and Pyramid Schemes
Maya wedged herself into a corner of Brooke's bedroom, careful not to disturb the loose cable snaking across the floor.
'This guy says it's not a pyramid scheme,' Brooke insisted, scrolling through a flashy presentation on her phone. 'It's a "success circle." We're at the top level if we join now.'
'Maximum bullshit,' Maya muttered. 'That's literally a pyramid diagram, Brooke.'
'You're just negative because your parents cut your cable.'
'My parents cut the cable because someone tried to charge us $200 for a "friendship marketing starter kit,"' Maya shot back. 'Which sounds suspiciously like what you're describing right now.'
Brooke's face fell, and Maya immediately felt like the worst friend ever.
'Brooke,' Maya softened, 'I get that you're trying to help. But schemes like this are designed to exploit people who need money desperately. That's how they work.'
'I just thought I could finally help with bills,' Brooke whispered.
The confession hung between them. Maya knew Brooke's family had been struggling since her mom lost her job last month—she'd noticed the generic groceries, the house always dark to save electricity.
'You're not stupid for hoping,' Maya said, finally giving up on avoiding the cable and stepping over it. 'But these presentations cherry-pick success stories. The vast majority of people lose money. That's just math.'
Brooke stared at her ceiling. 'I feel so dumb.'
'You're not. You're stressed and someone offered what looked like an easy answer.' Maya sat beside her. 'We can figure out something real. No fake pyramids, no bullshit.'
'Like what?'
'We could start that dog walking business you talked about? Real work, real money, zero upfront costs.'
'That actually requires effort,' Brooke groaned, but Maya heard the smile in her voice.
'Real work usually does.'
'Fine,' Brooke surrendered. 'But you're helping make flyers.'
'Deal.'
Brooke navigated back to their game. 'I'm blaming the cable if I lose.'
Maya laughed and accepted her controller. Friendship crisis averted, and nobody lost money to a predatory scheme tonight. Small wins.
