Cable Tied to Courage
Maya's room was her sanctuary. The flickering glow of her TV, her parents' premium cable package, and the existential dread of sophomore year had formed a perfect, comfortable cocoon. That is, until Kai burst in, already dripping wet.
"Pool party. Now. Tyler's house. Everyone's gonna be there."
Maya groaned. "I was planning to binge-watch instead of socially malfunctioning in a swimsuit."
"You're literally already tan. You're not gonna drown. I won't let you."
Maya's chest tightened. Swimming wasn't the issue. Well, not the ONLY issue. It was the way her stomach did flips when she saw Tyler in the hallways. It was the way her legs felt too exposed, too awkward, too everything.
"Take this," Kai said, tossing a bottle at her. "Vitamin D. Because you're pale as a ghost and I'm tired of your couch potato era."
The party was already in full swing when they arrived. Music thumped against the fence. People were cannonballing, laughing, existing in that effortless way Maya could never quite master.
And there was Tyler, shirtless by the diving board, looking unfairly comfortable.
"Maya!" Tyler waved. "Finally! We're playing chicken fights. You're with me."
Her brain short-circuited. "What?"
"Chicken fights!" Someone yelled. "Winners get primo cable access at my place tonight!"
"Wait, you guys don't have cable?" Maya blurted. "I thought—"
Tyler laughed. "No cable. My parents are all about 'digital minimalism.' It's tragic."
Before she could overthink it, Maya's hands were on Tyler's shoulders, his skin warm against her palms. The water buoyed them up, weightless and terrifying.
"Ready?" he asked, turning back to grin at her.
Maya realized she was already swimming, already laughing, already existing in that effortless way she'd admired from afar. She tightened her grip.
"Ready."
They lost spectacularly. But as she floated there, hair plastered to her forehead, Tyler grinning beside her, Maya decided her cocoon could wait a little longer.
