Cable Management Secrets
Zara's hands moved like a surgeon through the tangled mess behind the entertainment center. The Hendersons had no idea their cable situation revealed everything about their marriage.
The green HDMI cable went to the gaming console Tyler used to avoid his family. The dusty coaxial cable belonged to the TV Mr. Henderson watched alone late at night. And the frayed charging cable? That was Mrs. Henderson's, always dying at 15% because someone kept "borrowing" her charger.
Being the neighborhood's unofficial cable management specialist made Zara feel like a spy. Not in a cool, action-movie way. More like the person who knows exactly which brand of cereal you buy and how often you forget to separate your recycling. Knowledge was power, even if your power was knowing that the Millers fought about whose turn it was to vacuum based solely on whose charging cable was currently unplugged.
"Zara, honey!" Her mom appeared in the doorway, holding out the familiar neon orange bottle. "Time for your vitamin."
Zara suppressed a groan. The gummy multivitamins shaped like cartoon bears were humiliating enough. The fact that her mom still delivered them like she was six? Next level.
She caught her reflection in the dark TV screen - sixteen years old and still taking bear-shaped vitamins while solving other families' problems through cable organization. The irony wasn't lost on her.
But then her phone buzzed.群消息 from Maya: hey, my setup is a disaster, can you come over?
Maya, who'd ghosted her freshman year for the popular crowd. Maya, whose perfectly curated Instagram made Zara's stomach hurt every time she accidentally scrolled past it. Maya, asking for help.
Zara stared at the message. She could say no. She could maintain her dignity and continue extracting emotional intel from families who didn't realize their power strips told stories.
Or she could go over there and see if Maya's cables revealed something different than what she posted online.
"Mom," Zara said, swallowing the vitamin bear. "I have to go help a friend."
Her mom's eyebrows rose. "A friend?"
"Yeah. Turns out even popular people have cable management issues."
Zara grabbed her toolkit and headed out, wondering what stories she'd find tangled in Maya's room, and whether any of them would still include her.
