Cable Knotted Hearts
The orange sunset spilled across the baseball field like spilled juice, staining everything with that particular golden-hour glow that makes even the most awkward moments feel cinematic. Maya sat behind the backstop, supposedly waiting for her brother's practice to end, but actually dreading the moment she'd have to admit she'd quit the team.
"You're not even watching," said Finn, dropping onto the bench beside her. He had that perfect athlete confidence, like he'd never questioned a single thing about himself.
"I'm contemplating my life choices," Maya said, which was true. She'd quit baseball last week, told no one, and now she was lying to everyone including herself.
Finn laughed, pulling at the cable-knit sweater he wore even in this heat. "My dad says I have to play. Says it builds character. But honestly? I'd rather be doing literally anything else."
Maya turned to him, really looked at him for the first time. "You hate it too?"
"Hate it," Finn said. "I keep imagining I'm somewhere else. Like, what if I just... didn't show up? What if I took the bus to the beach instead?"
"We could do that," Maya said, the words tumbling out before she could second-guess herself. "Like, right now. We could just walk to the bus stop and disappear."
Finn's eyes widened. "For real?"
"For real."
They stood up together, leaving behind the orange-stained field and the expectations and the lies. As they walked toward the bus stop, Maya felt something unclench inside her chest. Some knots you had to pull apart gently, patient. Others you just had to cut.
"Where are we even going?" Finn asked, but he was grinning now.
"Anywhere but here," Maya said. "Anywhere but here."
