Cable Knit Truths

The old coaxial cable dangled from the wall, a black snake frozen mid-strike, abandoned when the building went wireless five years ago. Elena traced its path with her eyes while pretending to listen to Richard describe his latest merger.

"It's just standard due diligence," he said, smoothing his already perfect tie. "Every acquisition needs thorough vetting."

She remembered when he'd said that before their wedding, how he'd hired a private investigator to verify her background. She'd found the receipt in his coat pocket—a thick envelope containing photographs of her at her mother's grave, at her therapist's office, leaving the women's health clinic. He'd called it love; she'd called it surveillance. She'd married him anyway, because twenty-eight and lonely will make you forgive almost anything.

Now he wanted to buy her company. He'd spent months gathering intel, meeting her colleagues after hours, asking questions that sounded casual but weren't. A corporate spy in bespoke suits, infiltrating her professional life the way he'd invaded her personal one.

Elena's fingers found the cable's frayed end. She pulled, and it came away from the wall with a dry snap, trailing dust.

"What are you doing?" Richard asked.

"This cable," she said, dropping it into her briefcase. "It's been dead for years. Just hanging there, making everyone think it still connects to something."

She thought of the hat she'd bought yesterday—a wide-brimmed thing that would hide her face at the airport. She thought of the offshore account she'd opened, the new identity already being forged. Richard might be a spy, but he wasn't the only one who knew how to gather intelligence.

"I'm not selling," she said, and for the first time in their marriage, he looked at her without recognition. "And I'm not coming home."

The cable in her bag was heavy. It would have to be enough.
