Cable-Knit Confidence

Maya stood in front of her bathroom mirror, adjusting the oversized beanie she'd spent thirty dollars she didn't have on. It was supposed to be her armor against sophomore year—the hat that would make people think she was artsy and mysterious instead of just quiet.

"You're doing it again," her older sister called from the hallway. "Overthinking the vibes."

"Shut up, Jordan."

Maya pulled her phone out, thumbing through the group chat. Party at Jake's house tonight. Jake, who'd barely acknowledged her existence since middle school, who somehow grew six inches over summer and now looked like a completely different person. Everyone was going.

She grabbed her bag and checked her pocket. Nothing. Her stomach dropped. The tiny orange bottle—her mom's 'concentration supplements' that Maya definitely wasn't prescribed but absolutely needed for math tests—was gone.

"Have you seen my—"

"Your vitamin stash?" Jordan appeared in the doorway, already dressed for her college classes. "Mom flushed them. Said you need to learn actual focus skills."

Maya's face burned. "She what?"

"Welcome to the struggle, little sis." Jordan tossed something at her—a curling iron that was definitely stolen.

By 8 PM, Maya was at Jake's house, hat pulled low over her forehead, nursing a flat Dr Pepper. Jake approached, looking unfairly good in a way that made her brain short-circuit.

"Hey," he said. "Nice hat."

"Thanks."

"You wanna go upstairs? My cousin's got this setup, we've been trying to beat this boss all week."

Upstairs was different—quieter. Jake's room had cables everywhere, snaking across the floor like some electronic jungle. He handed her a controller, their fingers brushing. The moment stretched, electric and terrifying.

"So," Jake said, not looking at her. "You still do that art thing?"

"Sometimes."

"That's cool." A pause. "I always thought you were kinda... I don't know. Intense. In a good way."

Maya felt something loosen in her chest. The hat wasn't armor anymore. She was just Maya, sitting on a boy's bed, surrounded by cables, without her fake vitamins, completely herself.

"Yeah," she said, finally meeting his eyes. "I can work with that."
